Largely untouched by man, the unique environment of the Galápagos Islands is where Charles Darwin conducted his research to develop the theories of Natural Selection and Evolution. It was an honor to spend the day learning with fellow researchers at the Charles Darwin research Center (then we hung out at the beach and went to the bar :))

A visit to the Charles Darwin Research Station is a must do when visiting the island of Santa Cruz. The day is an opportunity to learn about Galapagos conservation in action. Over 200 scientists and volunteers are involved with research and conservation efforts at the station. They are most famous for their work trying to restore giant tortoises to their native DNA. One of the main attractions is the baby tortoises that they raise in captivity to return to their native island.

Like most areas in the Galapagos islands, you must hire a guide in order to visit things off the main road . At the Charles Darwin research center you can visit the museum with several exhibits for no charge, but if you want to go behind the scenes and learn about the work that the scientist are doing to restore giant tortoises to natural DNA levels you must pay $10 for a guide. We felt that the information gained from the Guide was well worth the $20 we spent for admission.
