The island of San Cristobal is the second most populated island in the Galapagos, home to approximately 10,000 people (Santa Cruz has a population of 25,000 and Isabela a population of 4,000 people). However, it’s the sea lions that steal the show here in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno (downtown San Cristobal) where sea lions will take over city benches and peers. These marine mammals are known for their playful behavior, barking, and ability to dive up to 200 meters,

While mostly docile, I was chased by a sea lion on the towns pier when I got inbetween the lion and the bench he wanted!! There are plenty of instances where folks have been bitten so always give these guys a wide birth (although sometimes that’s difficult to do).

At night the sea lions take over the town! The streets close to traffic and the sea lions can be found sleeping right in the road. I have gobs of sea lions video from town, here are just a few of my favorites -
